Un jeune Prince, très aimé de ses sujets tant il montrait justice et compassion, décida, un matin, qu’aujourd’hui il sortirait de l’enceinte de son merveilleux palais, et irait par la campagne vaquer à quelques rêveries. Ce qui fut fait. Le Prince sortit de son palais. Avec sa suite, évidement! Notre Prince ne sortait jamais sans une escorte de 1000 soldats et courtisans. Cela l’ennuyait d’ailleurs un peu. Il rêvait parfois de grandes escapades solitaires…

« Mais cet homme se noie ! » s’écria t-il. « Ne peut-on rien faire pour venir en aide à ce malheureux ? »
« Hélas, mon Prince… J’ai bien peur que ce vieil homme vive là ses derniers instants. » lui répondit son fidèle conseiller.
« Alors descendons ces rapides et recueillons son corps pour lui offrir digne sépulture ! » ordonna le Prince. Ce qui fut fait.

Arrivé au bas des rapides, les hommes se mirent à chercher, sur les bord du fleuve, la dépouille du vieillard certainement noyé. Mais rien. Pas l’ombre du malheureux nul par. Au bout d’un moment, alors que la troupe s’apprêtait à faire demi tour, un être sortie de l’eau et remonta sur la berge. C’était notre vieil homme, Ce qui stupéfia l’assemblée !

Le Prince s’approcha du miraculé et lui demanda :
« Comment, honorable vieillard, se peut-il que tu es survécu aux rapides ? Ne serais-tu pas un homme ? »
« Je n’ai aucune chance de me noyer, mon noble Prince. Je me suis transformé en eau, et j’ai ainsi descendu ces rapides comme n’importe quelle goute d’eau… »
« Assurément, voilà un prodige ! Mais quel est donc ton secret, Vieil homme ? Apprends-moi ce secret et je te couvrirai d’or ! »
« Mon secret, beau seigneur, le voici : Que tu sois puissant ou humble, que tu sois grand ou infime, que tu sois beau ou laid, que tu sois un arbre ou une pierre… apprends à te fondre dans ce qui te contient, et laisse ce que tu contiens se fondre à toi. Arrives à cela, et tu connaitras mon secret… car ainsi marche le monde… »

Ayant dit cela, le vieil homme disparu entre les buissons. Le Prince voulu le rattraper pour le questionner encore, mais il resta introuvable… sans doute s’était il transformé en souffle du vent…
